Setting the positions
- Which layout should I use?
- Whichever matches the spacing you have already decided on. Equal spacing puts a hole count evenly between your head and tail offsets. Paired stations place end holes at the head and tail and then pairs between them. Custom coordinates let you type the distances yourself. FoldPin does not choose for you and does not recommend a binding structure.
- What does a paired layout actually produce?
- End holes at the head and tail offsets, then the number of pairs you ask for. Within a pair the two holes sit the distance apart you set. The clear gaps between the pairs and the end holes come out equal. That is one common arrangement, not a rule about where stitches belong.
- Can I move one hole in a generated layout?
- Convert the layout to custom coordinates. Every position is carried over exactly, and then each one is editable on its own.
- Why was my position rejected?
- Positions have to be inside the guide, at least 2 mm from each end and at least 2 mm from the next hole, with no duplicates. Nothing is silently moved, rounded or dropped: the field tells you what is wrong and saving and exporting stay blocked until it is fixed.
- Why are there limits at all?
- Guides run from 30 to 600 mm with 2 to 60 holes. Those are limits of the software and of what can be marked legibly on a printed strip. They are not a statement about what a binding needs.
Units
- Does switching between millimetres and inches change my guide?
- No. The dimensions stay the same; only the numbers you read change. Switching back and forth leaves the guide as it was. Only a field you edit yourself changes it.
- Can I type fractions?
- In inches, yes: forms like 1/2 and 4 1/2 are accepted, as are decimals using your keyboard's decimal separator. Malformed or negative input is rejected rather than cleaned up into a number you did not mean.
Saved guides
- When is a guide saved?
- When you save it. Editing works on a draft, leaving with unsaved changes asks first, and if a save fails the draft is still there with the error shown.
- Can I try it without typing a guide in?
- Yes. There is an explicit option to load an example guide. A fresh install starts empty; nothing is added unless you ask for it.
- Can I copy a guide before changing it?
- Duplicate it, then edit the copy. Deleting asks for confirmation first.
- Can I move guides to another phone?
- Not in this version. There is no import or backup file format yet. Restoring a device backup may restore your guides if they were included in that backup.
Printing
- My printed holes do not match the app.
- Check print scaling first. Print at 100% or Actual Size and turn off Fit to Page or Scale to Fit, then measure the 50 mm check line on the sheet. If that line is not 50 mm, the page was scaled and every position on it is wrong by the same factor.
- Can the app stop my printer scaling the page?
- No. FoldPin draws the PDF at actual scale and nothing more. The print dialog, the driver and the paper are outside it, which is exactly why the check line is on every page.
- Is the diagram on screen life size?
- No. The on-screen diagram is a scaled preview, not a ruler. Measure the printed check line, not the screen.
- My guide is longer than the page.
- It continues onto more pages at full size rather than shrinking. The sections overlap by 10 mm, both sheets carry matching numbered join marks and the distance from the head, and marks inside the overlap appear on both pages on purpose. Trim and align on the marks.
- Which paper sizes are there?
- A4 and US Letter. The page count shown in the app is the page count of the PDF it produces, and you can preview the actual PDF before saving or sharing it.
- What is on the strip?
- A 30 mm wide strip with the fold line down the centre, crosshair marks at your positions, labelled head and tail ends, and trim edges. The check line sits outside the part you cut out.
Scope
- Will it tell me which binding to use?
- No. FoldPin holds and prints the positions you choose. It does not recommend a sewing structure, teach a stitch, or say anything about how strong a binding will be.
- Does it do imposition or page layout?
- No. It does not import a book PDF, arrange pages into signatures, or calculate boards, cases or thread.
Data and purchase
- Does it work offline?
- Yes. Creating guides, saving them and exporting a PDF all work in airplane mode. There is no account and no sign-in.
- Where is my data?
- On your device. The app does not upload it to us and there is no analytics in it. Device backups may include it, and a PDF you export goes to the destination you pick. See the privacy page.
- What does it cost?
- 2.99 US dollars, one purchase. Prices in other regions come from Apple's regional price tiers and vary. No subscription, no in-app purchases, no advertising, and nothing held back for a paid upgrade.
- I want a refund.
- Purchases go through Apple, so refunds do too: Apple's refund request page.
- What do I need to run it?
- An iPhone running iOS 17 or later. Portrait and landscape, with Dynamic Type including the larger accessibility sizes. There is no iPad or Mac version in this release.
